God of War (2018) ended with a cliffhanger. Atreus had a vision that Thor will confront them at the end of the Fimbulwinter. But now that God of War Ragnarök is nearing its launch, players will finally be able to conclude the Norse saga. Since the latest game is a continuation of the previous game’s story, you will likely see some of the same God of War characters appear in the new game. Of course, there will likely be new characters introduced in the latest game’s story as well.
In this article, we’ll list down both the old and likely new God of War characters in the new game. We’ll also provide a bit of information on what their likely role will be in God of War Ragnarök.
Returning God of War Characters
In this section, we’ll list down the characters that will likely return in God of War Ragnarök. We’ll also talk about the roles they might play.
Kratos
Of course, on top of the list is Kratos, the God of War, and the protagonist of the series. The game is set three years after the events of God of War (2018). The Fimbulwiner is coming to a close, and Kratos and Atreus are beginning their journey into the nine realms. Their goal is to prevent Ragnarök from taking place, while also trying to find more answers regarding Atreus’ identity as Loki. Their journey likely won’t be a peaceful one, as they will have to face many challenges and enemies along the way.
Atreus
Another returning character is Atreus, Kratos and Faye’s son. He’s now a teenager, which means he will have new abilities and powers to use. He’s not the same character that people remember him to be in 2018, so expect some surprises here. So he’s likely going to be a focus of this game, as their journey not only revolves around Ragnarök but also uncovering the mysteries of his true identity as Loki.
Mimir
The former Ambassador of the Aesir Gods will also return to accompany both Kratos and Atreus on their journey. His wealth of knowledge and experience will be a big help in the father and son’s journey across the nine realms. Not to mention his tales and jokes can also provide a bit of humor into this otherwise action-packed and gory game.
Freya
An ally that will likely turn enemy, Freya, the leader of the Valkyries will also return in God of War Ragnarök. Though she helped Kratos and Atreus in their first journey, she will likely be a foe here. She vowed revenge after Kratos killed Baldur, her son, in God of War (2018). So, expect to have some confrontation with her. Will it lead to her death or will she have a change of heart and help you once again? You’ll find out in the game.
Brok & Sindri
The Huldra Brothers, Brok, and Sindri will make their return in God of War Ragnarök. The dwarves appear in various parts of the first game, assisting Kratos and Atreus. They don’t assist in battle, but they forge new gear for the father and son to use and help in their journey. They were at odds with each other throughout the game, only making up towards the end of it. They’re responsible for crafting Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, and the Leviathan Axe, Kratos’ main weapon. It’s interesting what their stories will be now that Thor made his appearance.
God of War Ragnarök – New Characters
In this section, we’ll discuss the likely new characters joining the old ones in God of War Ragnarök. More powerful foes make their appearance here. But some allies will aid the father and son tandem in their journey.
Thor
The first new character to join the game is Thor, the God of Thunder. He’s one of the more known characters that will make an appearance in God of War Ragnarök. It follows Atreus’ vision and of course the death of his sons Modi and Magni. Both were killed by Atreus and Kratos, so Thor will confront them about it. He’s likely one of the main antagonists in the game, but probably not the final one.
Angrboda
The next character that will make her first appearance is Angrboda. She’s a young giantess who survived the genocide of the giants. She’s a confirmed character, who appears to be an ally of Kratos and Atreus and will help in their journey. What makes her interesting is that in Norse mythology, she’s known as the mate of Loki and the mother of monsters. She and Loki are the parents of Fenrir.
Tyr
The Norse God of War, Tyr, will also make his appearance for the first time in the game. Kratos and Atreus’ journey will lead them to him. Though this is his first appearance, he was a legend in the 2018 game. He was believed dead, after Odin imprisoned him, believing he was aiding the giants. But he’s pretty much alive and he’ll be a valuable ally to Kratos and Atreus.
Durlin
Durlin is another confirmed character in GOW Ragnarök. Not much information is given about the mysterious character. But it seems to be suggested that he is a dwarf merchant who’s also knowledgeable. Overall, he’s role is not clear as of the moment. But he may provide information to Kratos and Atreus.
Fenrir
There’s no information or detail yet that confirms Fenrir will make an appearance. But since his parents in Norse Mythology, Loki and Angrboda, are in the game, it’s not unlikely that the character will be introduced. Fenrir is a giant wolf in Norse Mythology, but it’s unlikely he’ll appear as one in this game.
Odin
The last possible character to appear in God of War Ragnarök is Odin. He is the father of Thor. So, it’s safe to say that if Kratos and Atreus manage to kill Thor, Odin will likely make his presence felt.
