Created by developers Double Fine Productions and publisher Xbox Game Studios, Psychonauts 2 is the most awaited sequel of Psychonauts. Released in April 2005, this wacky adventure game gained a cult classic status throughout the years.
As its fan-base grew in numbers, the demand for its sequel became stronger—and now it is set for release in 2020. This mind-bending action-platform video game is based on the adventures of Razputin (aka Raz). He is a run-away 10-year old boy with psychic abilities, but his father does not tolerate or appreciate his gift.
Double Fine went a long way before finally coming up with Psychonauts 2. From delayed release dates, financial troubles, and other technical issues, fans have been patiently waiting for the sequel. And here’s what we know about the upcoming game.
Psychonauts 2 Gameplay
Players will control the main character, Raz, as he unfolds the mystery of missing children in the camp. Players will explore the mind of unique characters through the mental world—a representation of each character’s consciousness and psychological issues. As the game progresses, Raz will gain significant psychic abilities such as telekinesis, levitation, pyrokinesis, and invisibility.
What to Expect
In this upcoming sequel, players will still see Raz and go on adventures with him. The game developer reveals that Raz will revisit the Psychonauts Headquarters and would realize that his friends would need him more than he needs them.
Like the first game, players will be controlling the main character, Raz. The game will start where the first game left off. Raz assists Milla Vodello and Sasha Nein into rescuing Truman Zotto, the head Psychonaut. Together, they have to find out who the mole is, and stop him before he executes an evil plan!
Psychonauts 2 Release Date
Due to financial troubles, the initial 2018 release date was pushed back. The studio needed help to fund the sequel and established Fig as their own crowd-funding platform. The company called upon its fans for help to make the sequel a reality, and has successfully raised $4 million at the start of 2016.
Psychonauts 2 is expected to be released in 2020. However, Double Fine and Xbox Studios are tight-lipped about any new details. But Xbox Studios recently admitted that they experience difficulties due to the ongoing pandemic—probably due to logistics and manpower concerns. This poses yet another roadblock for the awaited sequel. The game is once again stalled—and this time, due to a global crisis. If the game can’t push through with the 2020 release date, fans speculate that it might be available on 2021 instead.
Platforms
When Double Fine was bought by Xbox Game Studios, fans were worried that the sequel won’t be available in other consoles anymore. However, the developer assured fans that the game would still be released on multiple platforms. Aside from Xbox and Microsoft Windows, Psychonauts 2 will be available for PlayStation, Mac, and Linux. It only needs a 64-bit processor to run well on Windows and Mac.
