2048 and Other Cool Math Games

Features

In the vast and saturated world of puzzle games, multiple titles stand out from the rest. Although mostly dominated by word games, who would have thought that one of the most unlikely themes or subjects would set to compete, that game is none other than 2048.

If you’re already familiar with the game, it is somewhat similar to the game Threes. However, 2048 is a bit different because instead of matching tiles, you’ll match everything with numbers. Your main goal is to achieve a total of 2048 before you run out of moves. The game might be tricky at first, but once you get on with how the rule works, you’ll eventually get 2048 in no time.

Of course, if you are into math and loves to play tricks with numbers, 2048 would be an easy game for you. Moreover, Part of what makes 2048 is the fact that the game is entirely free. The reason, according to Cirulli, is that he was unwilling to make money from something he did not invent. Thus, the game, including its source code remains free to access up to this day.

The modesty of 2048’s mechanics, presentation, and availability of its source code inspired other developers to create different variations of the game. One example is the iconic 2048 pancakes. Nevertheless, 2048 pancakes is merely an example of a game inspired by the humble mechanics of the game. That said, there are more cool math games out there which are as addictive as 2048. Check out some of these games below.

Although the game still employs the use of the combination mechanics similar to 2048, this brilliant match is far from being just a typical 2048 clone.

Sudoku

Long before 2048 became the representative of a cool math game, there was the classic game of Sudoku. For those who are living under a rock for the past century, Sudoku, despite the Japanese sounding name the modern Sudoku is not a Japanese invention. It is, in fact, the brainchild of a 74-year-old retired architect from Connersville, Indiana named Howard Garns.

Dell Magazine first published Sudoku in 1979 as a puzzle called Number Place. It was not until 1984 when the game first made its way to Japan through the Monthly Nikolist as “Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru,” which means: the digits must be single.” The name overtime became Sudoku, which is a registered trademark in Japan.
